TVS Diode Application

The TVS diode uses the diode operating principle. After receiving an electric shock, it will immediately break down and then shut down, without damage to the device, so it can be said that there is no life limit. For varistors, it adopts the principle of physical absorption. After each ESD event, the material will undergo certain physical damage, forming an irrecoverable leakage channel; Moreover, to achieve better absorption effects, it is necessary to use more materials and increase their volume, thereby limiting the application in today's miniaturized products.

TVS tubes are made of semiconductor materials, which can be designed to reduce the capacitance value, while varistors cannot reduce their parasitic capacitance value.

The varistor made of zinc oxide undergoes aging after energy shock, gradually reducing response time and protective ability. TVS tubes do not have aging problems.

 

Application:

Two are different aspects of use. Varistors tend to protect the power supply and absorb large amounts of energy. They can age after repeated use. TVS tubes are mainly used for anti-static protection, with fast response speed and low current capacity, making them suitable for the last level of protection. They are used more frequently in signal interface circuits.
